Soon after its foundation in 1954 Janáček Philharmonic Orchestra Ostrava gained renown as a front Czech symphonic body. Since its first tour in 1958, it visited most countries of Europe, USA, Japan, Korea, Taiwan and Australia. The orchestra collaborates with front soloists and opera stars (Barbara Hendricks, Plácido Domingo, José Carreras, Simon Estes, Joseph Calleja, Paata Burchuladze). Its broad repertoire includes symphonic music as well as opera, operetta, symphonic jazz and rock music. Since the end of the 90’s the orchestra focuses on the interpretation of local and international contemporary music. Along with the Ostrava Center for New Music it organizes Ostrava Days and it also gained recognition at avant-garde festivals in Prague, Warsaw and Berlin. Dozens of CDs of the orchestra were released on Czech as well as international labels.
