Pretty Yende

The Bohuslav Martinů Philharmonic Orchestra, Zlín
Christopher Franklin – conductor

The reviews of the South-African soprano Pretty Yende’s Prague debut read “A Phenomenon on its Start “.  Hudební rozhledy Magazine wrote: ”The young South-African beauty is a phenomenon. She possesses an impressive vocal fond, it’s bearable, firm and flexible and it carries a sound that can easily embrace the entire Smetana Hall. The audience welcomed this cultivated beauty with a great applause…” Nachtigall Artists managed to hire Pretty Yende (born 1985) soon after her unbelievable step-in at the Metropolitan Opera, New York which started her starry career. She made her debut at the Met on 17th January 2013 as Adèle alongside Juan Diego Flórez in Rossini’s opera Le comte Ory. The reviews were more than positive. She stepped in for Nino Machaidze and assumed the role in one week! “As unbelievable start of an unbelievable career” wrote one of the reviews.

Pretty grew up in Cape Town and graduated from opera singing at the South-African Musical Academy and she continued with her studies at Accademia Teatro alla Scala, Milan. Her first role on a European stage was Micaëla (Bizet: Carmen) at the Lithuanian National Opera; other roles followed soon: Music (Monteverdi: Orfeo) in Mantua and Verona, and Clara (Gershwin: Porgy a Bess) and the German Opera in Berlin and Norwegian Opera in Oslo. In 2010, she won the Belvedere and Vincenzo Bellini International Competitions and in 2011 she won the First Prize, Zarzuela Prize and the Audience Award – as the first singer in history. In 2011, she made her debut at La Scala as Berenice (Rossini: L'occasione fa il ladro).

After her above mentioned triumphant debut at the Met, she performed on many renowned stages around the world: in 2013 she appeared at Theater an der Wien (Adèle in Rossini’s Le Comte Ory), Los Angeles Opera (Micaëla in Bizet’s Carmen), in 2014 at La Scala (Rossini’s Adèle ) and she returned to the Met (Pamina in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte). In 2015, she was Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor at the German Opera Berlin; she returned to Los Angeles Opera (Pamina in Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro) and Gran Teatre del Liceu, Barcelona (Norina in Donizetti’s Don Pasquale). Engagements for 2016 include Rosina (Rossini: Il barbiere di Siviglia), and Donizetti’s Lucia at the Paris National Opera, Elvira (Bellini: I puritani) in Zurich, Amira (Rossini: Ciro in Babilonia) at Rossini’s Festival in Pesaro, Adina (Donizetti: L’elisir d’amore) at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich and Juliette (Gounod: Roméo et Juliette) at the Metropolitan Opera.
